Keen competition at Barry Chess Club

By Contributed Item in Other Sports

After the exertions from the British Championships, it was back to a more normal week.

Round four of the Barry Ladder took place with 12 of our players in action. It was perhaps unusual at this stage of the competition to see the higher rated players in five of the six matches completed have the black pieces.

At the end of the evening it was white 0, black 6.

As anticipated, there were wins for Tom Cooke, Sam Jukes and Sam White. Tom now heads the ladder and has been scheduled to play John Ryles in the final round of play. The tournament winner can now only be one of these two.

The bottom two boards came as a slight surprise to me. Chris Green has a higher rating (even if it is by only 60 odd points) than his opponent John Stephenson.

Familiarity breeds contempt so they say.

Chris is well known for playing the same opening as white in most of his games. Perhaps this gave John the opportunity to plan his response prior to the night of the game.

John took the win eventually to close the ratings difference between them closer to 30 points.

On the bottom board were two of our team captains. Both had a good season last year but of late Stephen Bonutto has struggled and Martin Ricketts has been unlucky to find himself playing tough opponents in every round of the ladder.

Let this be a lesson to you Martin, you really need to get a good result in the first round of the ladder or you will find your opponents get tougher with each game you lose.

Stephen managed to earn his first win this half year to leave Martin marooned at the bottom of the table.

The Barry Chess Club meets at 7:30 pm each Monday at the West End Club. St. Nicholas Road, Barry CF62 6QY. The club is open to players of all standards; whether you are interested in playing competitive chess or just the occasional friendly games.

New players are very welcome to just turn up on the night but if you contact one of the club members through the website we can explain what is happening on the night you have in mind, and arrange for someone to greet you on your arrival. For more details visit our website at
