Last Sunday, Llantwit Major Bowls Club welcomed Saundersfoot Bowls Club for a friendly mixed ladies and mens match.
Saundersfoot were well represented with 44 bowlers plus spectators arriving by coach.
Before the game a ‘spider’ was held in aid of Llantwit Major Bowls Club’s chosen charity, the Welsh Air Ambulance. A spider is basically a dartboard which is placed in the centre of the bowling green and to which every bowler, with one foot in the ditch, bowls a wood. The nearest bowl wins a prize.
The proceeds of the spider were generously added to by Saundersfoot, who operated a fine system for assorted misdemeanors throughout the day.
These fines plus the spider saw £86.20 added to the amount raised so far.
A further £48 was raised during last month’s friendly, when the visitors were the Ardargh Bowls Club from Bristol. Both these amounts will be gift aided.
Sunday was an extremely enjoyable event and the rain held off, although the temperature did drop a few degrees as the afternoon wore on.
The Red Arrows were seen, although, to be fair, they were actually performing at an event in Barry!
After the game we were entertained by songs, all with lyrics appertaining to bowls, and humorous stories involving some of the opposing players!
Special thanks must go to club captain, John Nixon and his ‘better half’ Helen, who put in a tremendous effort both preparing beforehand and on the day itself.
Thanks also to Pat Harmon and Ambrose Horgan who staffed the extremely busy bar. We look forward to visiting Saundersfoot next year.
