New mayor loves the community feeling in Porthcawl

Lorrie Desmond-Williams was born in Margate, Kent – a town she sees as similar to Porthcawl.

She said: “It is why I love Porthcawl and call it ‘home’.

“The seafront at Margate is being used as an example of what the new Porthcawl ‘town beach’ will look like after the planned redevelopment.

“Just walking down the street and knowing people is a wonderful feeling of belonging and community.”

Lorrie, who has three children, served in the Royal Navy where she was part of the communications and encrypting division.

Ben, her eldest son, was born in the Royal Naval Hospital, Gibraltar. On leaving the Navy, whilst living in Portsmouth, Lorrie went to Eastleigh College and Southampton University to study accountancy.

She moved to Bridgend and then Porthcawl.

Lorrie has served as the town council representative on a number of outside groups, including Porthcawl Shout, Porthcawl Chamber of Trade, Porthcawl Museum, and the Coastal Partnership.
