On Wednesday, Llantwit Major mens bowls team travelled to Dinas Powys for their first Munro Cup match, winning on three rinks in a 82-68 shot win.

Graham Jones’ rink started well winning the first four ends to take a six shot lead. Llantwit maintained their lead being eight shots ahead by the 11th end. Dinas hit back taking the next four ends to cut Llantwit’s lead to two shots.

Llantwit won the final end to win by four shots, a satisfactory result for Llantwit’s skip, a former player of Dinas.

Adrian Woods’ rink were involved in a high scoring game. Glyn Fox, Llantwit’s lead, gave them a good start.

On most ends the game fluctuated with neither side managing to take a commanding lead. The game was level on the 16th end with Llantwit grabbing the points, scoring five shots on the final two ends.

Steve Booker’s rink had a hard-fought match with the game in the balance until the penultimate end when Llantwit conceded five shots; despite Llantwit winning the final end they lost by one shot.

Neville Young’s rink took the first four ends to establish a seven shot lead, with Llantwit’s two front men, Geoff Timms and Graham Merchant, outbowling their opposite numbers.

Llantwit kept their lead throughout the match with Arthur Hayes making a valuable contribution to Llantwit’s six shot win.

Rink scores:?GJ 19-15, AW 27-22, SB 18-19, NY 18-12.

Llantwit played their second Carruthers match on Saturday when they visited Romilly.

This was always going to be a tough match against a first division side, made more difficult by playing on an exceptionally heavy green which most of Llantwit’s players could not master, the result of which was a defeat on all rinks, 88-61 shots.

Graham Jones’ rink had a tough tussle against a rink skipped by Geoff Wright. Llantwit gave as good as they got and after winning the first end they lost it on the third end, regaining it again on the seventh end. After this Romilly then kept the lead to win by two shots.

Charles Hiscock’s rink, after losing the first end, came alive, scoring nine shots over five ends.

Romilly came back at them, scoring eight shots over five ends to take the lead by one shot.

Llantwit then hit another purple patch scoring another six shots over the next four ends to be five shots up on the 19th end.

The game looked in the bag for Llantwit only for Romilly to score seven shots on the final two ends to win by two shots.

Steve Booker’s rink were six shots down after two ends. They came back to take the lead on the sixth end but this was shortlived as Romilly went ahead again on the next end, a lead they held onto for the remainder of the game to win by six shots.

Neville Young’s rink only held the rink once on the second end.

Romilly then punished them, scoring seven on the next end with Romilly’s front men playing well to give them a great start. Llantwit were never in touch, going down heavily.
